hi all !

we need help with listing some mmorpg features that uo supports, especially stuff that is rare in other mmorpgs.

on the main website (http://iris2.de) we already listed
player houses, mounts, pet-taming, cooking, clothing, mining, crafting, we could use more detailed descriptions and screenshots for those.

features that are rare in other mmorpg :

building cannons together from equipment,
siege, destroying building parts with cannons,
does anyone know shards where this is possible ?

i've seen a few features on server descriptions on http://www.gamesites200.com/ultimaonline/
Pet Breeding, can anyone explain how this works and maybe post a few screenshots ?
if you like you can also make a wiki page directly.
we'll add a link to it on the protected main-page.

does anyone know shards with alchemy system or custom spell/magic systems somewhere ?

sience showed me a so called "armymod" or something like that where you can control a small group of npc, and give them commands like stand in formation, attack, etc.
does anyone know shards where this is used ?

i heard there are scripts for completely player-built cities, does anyone know where this is ? screenshots would be interesting.

how does Farming work ?
how can i make fruit-cakes from fruits i grew myself ?
any descriptions, links, screenshots etc welcome.

i heard of shards where there are lots of custom resources like multiple types of woods and ore, does anyone have more info on that ?

lets put up a decent feature-list to show whats possible with uo and that none of the so called "modern" "mmorpg"'s can match.

Pet Breeding is an NON OSI style system published on RunUO website, it's called FS Taming system, it includes something called "DNA system" and "bioengineering"
I think it has bad political implications, my shard had it before and I removed it.

Alchemy and Magical equipment: My shard has potion mixing & runic equipments. Potion mixing are simple, you mix according to receipts and u get special potions. Runic equipments had max 3 prefix "runic words" and 3 suffix words. Each word is responsible for some magical properties (like +2d4 defense chance), and every word can be extracted from one equipment and reinject to another.

Farming is from RunUO SVN, the new region.xml def has "spawn" tags in some of the regions, which specifies what type of corps will be growing (auto spawning) in the region, and players can go harvest them. I want to create a custom system where players need to grow the corps themselves, takes care of it and later enjoy harvesting it.

IMO the biggest feature in UO that beats every other MMORPG is it's philosophy (or was). From day one Lord British wanted an open ended world with very little restrictions. You can virtually do anything you want to. All the little details has been taken care of to simulate a real world, an no other online games focuses on this area. For example, I've seen no other MMORPG in which you can grow crops, milk cows, shearing sheeps, etc. This allows an enormous amount of role playing in the game.

Which leads to the (rather sad) point of EA ruining UO by introducing Trammel/Felucca, all the rare weapons and ever increasing damage you can deal, and worst of all, UOKR - if you paid attention to the game, all the little details not longer exist, and now house menu system is among the very last system they'll try to implement. All the main effort has been directed to create a "new interface" UO doesn't need (Backpack art is now a history) and "eye candies" that is out of date.

thanks, thats a few interesting points.
by the way, non-osi doesn't matter, iris won't work on osi servers anyway due to encryption.

could you expand on the "etc" a bit, please ? this is EXACTLY the kind of stuff i had in mind, the longer the list, the better =)

Being able to make virtually any item available to players, using different skills.
Build houses
own vendors, be your own boss
Bagball game
being really creative about your backpack - bag art

list goes on...I can only think of so much at once

We should do a features site with short discription and screenshots/videos of it.
What you think?

I had this UO Bomberman video in mind ;-).

it's different from shard to shard...depends on which exact server you are talking about, the features can be a lot different...

It's hard to make an universal "third party UO feature list"

it doesn't have to be complete, but it would be cool to show some especially interesting ones, and maybe some others that are present on a large number of shards.

like telling people who don't know uo what's possible in it.

i also had the impression that some people playing uo for a long time don't know that things like full player-cities and destroying building parts with cannons are possible with server scripts, so i think collecting some infos and links on those and similar things is good in more than one way :

iris gets a massive featurelist describing what makes uo different from the other mmorpgs, suitable to attract non-uo-players,

people playing uo might discover some things they didn't know before,

and maybe even people wanting to make their own rpg might consider uo+iris as a basis for their projects.

That's a good idea, you'll have our full support.

I'll write up a complete feature list of TNJ (uofans.com) and post it here later.

The most interesting one, I think, is the ability to customize your own equipments via the recombination of runic power words. The possibilities are endless (well, not endless, we can calculate it exactly :P. We have 170 words, half prefix half suffix, each equipment supports 3P3S, no two same words can exist in the same equipment, so the combinations are 85*85*84*84*83*83 = 3.5E11, on each piece of equipment.)

But that's just the combat aspect, i've always believed UO is not a game about combating and killing other people, it's about finding out who you are in a virtual world. Make sure you promote that in your feature list clearly, otherwise ppl who gain interest in UO due to the various combating features will soon find themselves in a wrong place.

It is not a bad slogan, but to be honest i hate slogans, as they tend to instantly drive people away who for some reason don't like them. I think something like uo is so vast that it cannot (and should not) be summarised in a few words.

back to topic : such a featurelist would be excellent, thanks pmouse =) that rune system sure sounds interesting.

One way to find out what is possible with the UO System is the "Custom Script Database for RunUO"

direct link (excel):
http://www.runuo.com/forums/attachments ... 7a.xls.rar

direct link (mht (only IE)):
http://www.runuo.com/forums/attachments ... 7a.mht.rar

forum thread:
http://www.runuo.com/forums/custom-scri ... runuo.html

All scripts listed here are custom modifications for standard UO (RunUO).

or who you want to be. :)

I have good experience with farming. It was some custom harvesting script, i believe also found at runuo site.

Basically, you bought seeds from NPCs, then plant them in any "farmland" areas, plenty of those at west of Brit. There was tons of choices what to plant, carrot, cotton etc. etc. seeds. I personally made a quite a business with cotton->cloth myself.

Best thing about UO is the almost endless possibilities. This is what i think makes UO unique to other MMORPGs and which is why UO is still around after all this time.
