Do we need to download the new stable release and reinstall (the link was provided in the news), OR should the updater work?

If the updater should work, it didn't for me so I'll then put in my stack trace and output into the bug tracker.

I suppose I'll add that I there was an error mid-update but I clicked update again and it seemed to patch up alright to 2366.

if you use unstable, no need to download. just use the updater.

if you use stable you can also use the updater, but don't switch from stable to unstable and back.

the new release is only for new people and for people who want a clean install.

Well after updating stable versions using the updater, it crashes, I'll open up a bug tracker with the info in a moment.

After I do that, shall I uninstall and reinstall with the release download? Or is there any worth to keeping things the way they are to try and diagnose the problem?

I left the tracker closed because the problem now is different.

After deleting the RenderSystem_Direct3D9.dll and updating, the crash still happened giving the same error.

I did a full uninstall (directory and shortcuts gone), and then installed Iris using the new release download. Unfortunately, (after updating) it still gave the same error.

I also tried reinstalling and running the client without updating first. That didn't work.

A popup says it cannot find d3dx9_33.dll which isn't quite the same as RenderSystem_Direct3D9.dll... I couldn't find it on any of my hardware partitions...

So are there any more ideas?
Is anyone else having trouble with the newest version?

Hey,

This problem is most likely due to you not having an updated version of the DirectX 9c+ redist installed.

You can grab the new August release over at :
http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... redist.exe

Let me know if that sorts everything out - should add this type of problem to the FAQ wiki-page :)

Mrrr is right. You need to update your directx !

Do not only download the dll, because this gives many unknown sideeffects.

Bingo.

Using the new redistributable to update was the trick.

I'm surprised there's no other way to update other than downloading the entire redist package and using it to update (I had 9.0c installed but it was lacking).

So did someone update to the newest DirectX and add some code that used it in the past week or two? I'm just trying to figure out why Iris suddenly stopped working. If so, is there a way to let users know when they need to update to the newest DirectX?

Thanks for the help :-)

Ok here wo go.

DirectX 9c is not Direct9c. It depends on the runtime build ;-). For normal Users don't understandable, but it is like it is.

It's an common Microsoft SLA that you always have to install the newest DirectX runtime!

Every commercial Game brings a DirectX runtime with it and installs it during Game installation.

We don't include directx into our Installer, just because the runtime is to big. We mentioned it everywhere on our Site (mainpage, downloadpage, install manual), that you have to update your directX.

So i see no need to include it.

Now to the problem. Ogre 1.4.7-current (1.4.9) is compiled against the August 2006 SDK of Directx.

So it's no Iris issue, it's an Ogre issue.

Now why is not build against the very old DirectX SDK from 2002? Just because the runtime was updated for bugfixes and Speed improvements.

Also if you play other commercial Games, you should have a newer runtime then August 2006. So you shouldn't have this problem.

Thanks for the clarification. I was just curious if you knew an updated version of DirectX was used before making the release. If so, posting a message saying that everyone should update would be nice.

I do not get notification from MS saying that a new version of DirectX is released so I generally update only when something I use/play requires it.

In this case, if a similar problem occurs, I now know that I need to go check if there's a new DirectX release.
